FAQs

Test kit purchase

It has been a while since I purchased the kit. Can I still use it?

Please check the expiry date listed on the package. If the date has expired, GeneLife is unfortunately not able to perform the test and a new testing kit would need to be purchased. We suggests participants to return their samples within a few days of the reception of their testing kit. If you intend to send your sample immediately, it is fine to keep the sample at room temperature. However, if you are not able to send the sample within a couple of days, it is best to keep in a cool place, preferably a refrigerator. DNA damage occurs most during the summer from the high temperature and humidity; thus, it is recommended to keep the samples in a refrigerator.

× CLOSE

Should I brush my teeth before collecting the saliva sample?

What is a retest?

Genetic testing technology requires good quality saliva samples for optimum results. If too many germs, chemical substances, food/drink residues, etc. are present in the saliva sample, results might be altered. In such case, a retest might be required.

Genesis Healthcare Asia, as your genetic testing partner, has incorporated best practices in selecting the most advanced equipment and utilizing highly trained Genetic Testing Technicians to provide you with the most accurate genetic testing results. However, the Customer should be aware that your saliva sample may not pass our internal testing protocol or may result in errors when the following conditions occur: if your saliva does not contain enough volume of DNA, if you do not provide enough saliva, or bacterial or viral infections and chemical residue that might be present in the saliva sample could significantly lower the testing accuracy. If our testing process and protocol detects any likely failure PRIOR to genotyping process, we will send a second saliva collection kit at no extra charge to the Customer. However, the Customer will bear the shipping costs to send the new saliva sample back to us. If the attempt to process the second sample results in failure, we will offer to send a new (the third) saliva collection kit to the user for a fee, and the Customer will bear the shipping costs to send the third saliva sample back to us.

× CLOSE

I have received a message for re-test, will it be an extra cost?

For Customers who purchased GeneLife Haplo 3.0, GeneLife Generations, Genesis2.0 or Myself 2.0:

If the saliva sample arrives in good condition and pass our internal testing procedures and genotyping protocols, a 97% call rate is expected (or any other percentage as stipulated in our standard procedures, which may be updated from time to time). A call rate is the percentage of accuracy at which the results are produced and expected. If the genotyping results in a call rate falls under 70%, Genesis Healthcare Asia will resend a collection kit at no charge and offer you a retest at no additional charge. If the genotyping results are over 70% call rate and if the Customer wishes to retest in order to obtain a higher call rate, then we will offer a single retest at a cost which would include a new saliva collection kit. Despite any relevant technological advancements in Genetic Testing, GeneLife and Genesis Healthcare Asia reserves the right to refuse a retest for a Customer if the Company believes that the saliva samples provided by the Customer are not of sufficient quality for whatever reasons known or unknown. Genesis Healthcare Asia will not be obligated to disclose the refusal reason(s) for retesting the Customer’s saliva sample.

For Customers who purchased GeneLife Diet, GeneLife Skin, GeneLife Sports or GeneLife Metabo:

One retest will be provided free of charge to the Customer and a new collection device will be provided to the Customer free of charge. However, re-test required twice or more, a fee will be charged for these subsequent retests, including the collection device and the test and analysis.

× CLOSE

What is the expiration date for the kit?

Please check the expiry date listed on the package. If the date has expired, GeneLife is unfortunately not able to perform the test and a new testing kit would need to be purchased.

We suggests participants to return their samples within a few days of the reception of their testing kit.

For unused and unopened test kits, the expiration date is approximately 12 months. If you have opened it, please use the kit immediately, otherwise an opened kit could become contaminated once opened, even if you do not use it.

What can I learn from a Genetic Test?

Genetic Researchers have started to identify which genes affect the onset of lifestyle diseases. Thus, a Genetic Test will allow you to understand which diseases you are at genetic risk of developing in the future.
Of the Genes that are already mapped, it is known that each individual has a 0.1% difference in the sequence. Since the genes do not change during one’s lifetime, you need to only test once. You can make better lifestyle choices based on your risk profile.

× CLOSE

Will I develop the disease/condition if my genetic results show that I am at high risk?

Risk Assessment Genetic Testing only assesses the genetic risk, thus, it does not mean that one will develop the disease, and if preventive measure are incorporated early, the probability of prevention even in delaying the onset of disease.
Even though the test results is high risk, it does not mean that you will development the diease. If you are at high risk, changing your lifestyle through better diet and exercise, you increase the chances of not developing the disease.

× CLOSE

Will my genetic test results change over time? Do I need to take the test again?

No. Your DNA does not change during your lifetime (except under extreme circumstances), thus you need to take the test only once.

× CLOSE

In-App purchase

Can I purchase GeneLife kits via the app?

Depending on the type of test you purchased, you might be able to purchase other GeneLife kits. It varies based on the product, type of test and the date your original test was performed. Please check the section My DNA in the GeneLife mobile application to review what tests are available for you.

× CLOSE

I already purchased a Genesis 2.0/Myself 2.0 and want to buy GeneLife Generations or GeneLife Haplo3.0. Why do I need to do a test again and for a higher price?

This can happen if you have a low "call rate" for the genes that we analyze in order to produce your ethnicity results. Having a low "call rate" means that the DNA that we have collected from you previously is not enough to produce an accurate result for your ethnicity and ancestor migrations. Please check the options available in the GeneLife mobile application for the options available, if any.

× CLOSE

I already purchased a Generations and want to buy a Genesis 2.0/Myself 2.0. Why do I need to do a test again and for a higher price?

Similar to the above scenario, this can happen if you have a low "call rate" for the genes that we analyze in order to produce your results for Genesis 2.0 and Myself 2.0. Having a low "call rate" means that the DNA that we have collected from you previously is not enough to produce an accurate result for items that we test for in Genesis 2.0 and Myself 2.0. Please check the options available in the GeneLife mobile application for the options available, if any.

× CLOSE

I already purchased one of your lifestyle kits (Diet, Sports, Skin and Metabo). Why do I need to do a test again if I want to purchase another kit via the app?

Our lifestyle kits (Diet, Sports, Skin and Metabo) are tests that analyze specific genes. The testing methods for these kits are different which means that a new test is required if you are purchasing any of our other tests.

× CLOSE

How long do I need to wait for my results if I purchase through the app?

It depends. Please refer to the scenarios below.

    - Instant results
  • - have a Genesis2.0 and buying Myself2.0 and vice versa
  • - have a Generations and buying Genesis2.0 or Myself2.0
  • - have a Genesis2.0, Myself2.0 or Generations and buying any of our lifestyle tests (Diet, Sports, Skin - except Metabo)
    - 3 working days
  • - have a Genesis2.0 or Myself2.0 and buying Generations
  • - have a Genesis2.0 or Myself2.0 and buying Haplo 3.0

If you have purchased our Genesis2.0 or Myself2.0 and want to buy Generations, depending if you have a low call rate for the genes tied to ethnicity, you will need to do a new test. This is also true vice versa if you have purchased a Generations and want to buy a Genesis2.0 and/or Myself2.0. Please follow the link provided in the product page in the app.

If you have only bought one of our lifestyle kits (Diet, Sports, Skin and Metabo) and you want to purchase a new kit, you will need to do a new test.

New tests typically take 4-6 weeks before the results are available.
